Fort Carson, CO
Fort Carson is a U.S. Army installation in unincorporated El Paso County, located south of Colorado Springs between Interstate 25 and Vietnam Veterans Memorial Highway (CO-115). The installation spans 214 square miles, covering a CDP of roughly 14,000 residents while extending south into Fremont and Pueblo counties.
Camp Carson was established in 1942 following the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, when Colorado Springs purchased open land and donated it to the War Department. Named in honor of 19th-century frontiersman and Army officer Kit Carson, the site was designated Fort Carson in 1954 and has since housed nine divisions. Today, Fort Carson’s scenic location has made it one of the most requested duty stations in the entire Army. The fort’s motto, “Best Hometown in the Army,” was adopted in 2007.
