U.S. Air Force Academy, CO
The United States Air Force Academy (USAFA) educates officer cadets of the U.S. Air Force. The campus is located immediately north of Colorado Springs in El Paso County. It spans 29 square miles east of the Rampart Range of the Rocky Mountains, at an elevation of more than 7,200 feet.
Congress passed legislation in 1954 to begin construction of the new Air Force Academy, and the Colorado Land Acquisition Commission soon purchased the necessary parcels of land. The first graduation took place in 1959, and the Academy admitted women starting in 1976. Within the Academy area is a CDP of some 7,000 residents, covering a large portion of the campus grounds including the cadet housing facilities. The Academy is one of the state’s largest tourist attractions, attracting roughly one million visitors each year.
