Black Forest, CO
Black Forest is a community within El Paso County, located northeast of Colorado Springs close to the U.S. Air Force Academy. Home to a population of roughly 14,000 residents, Black Forest covers a land area of more than 127 square miles.
A larger region known as the Pineries dictates local history. One particular portion of dense Ponderosa pines eventually became known as the Black Forest. In the late 1850s this land became a major timber source, and the first of several sawmills appeared in 1860. Farming and ranching later took over the area with a variety of crops, most notably potatoes. Black Forest was mostly consolidated into large ranches in the early 20th century, a few of which remain in operation today.
